Following the largest Meningitis B outbreak ever seen in the UK earlier this year in Kent, the Government has announced a new, time-limited MenB vaccination programme to protect young people ahead of the autumn 2026 academic term.
The service will be commissioned exclusively through community pharmacies as a new Advanced service, and we are pleased to confirm that Carlton Lane Pharmacy will be offering this vital vaccination.
Who Is Eligible for the MenB Vaccine?
The following groups are eligible for the two-dose vaccination programme:
- Year 13 students (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008) – this applies regardless of their future education plans
- Under-25s (born on or after 21 July 2001) who are starting university for the first time in autumn 2026
- Under-25s starting residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026
- International students under 25 entering their first year of university in England
Please note: Postgraduates or those starting a second or later year are not covered by this one-off offer, as the programme prioritises those at highest immediate risk.
Why Now?
The decision follows concerning meningitis trends. The Kent outbreak was the fastest growing and largest MenB outbreak ever recorded in the UK, and there have been more MenB clusters than normal this year, some larger than usual. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) estimates that the relative risk of invasive MenB disease in first-year university students is substantially greater than in their peers.
Meningococcal disease is life-threatening and can be fatal in around 10% of cases. It can also result in life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, and brain damage. The MenB vaccine is estimated to be 85-95% effective.
When Will the Service Start?
- Service commences: 20 July 2026
- First dose: Available from late July 2026
- Second dose: To be administered at least 28 days later, ideally before term starts in September 2026
Eligible students will be contacted directly through the NHS App, by text, email, or letter, and will be sent a link to book a pharmacy appointment.
Two Doses Required for Full Protection
Two doses of the MenB vaccine are required for full protection. The programme has been timed to ensure both doses can be received before the expected peak of disease in October and November.
For international students coming to the UK to study, the Government is encouraging them to have at least a first dose before travelling to ensure both doses can be completed in time.
