We are thrilled to share some groundbreaking news with our patients at Carlton Lane Pharmacy. On 11 June 2026, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the Wegovy® pill – the first-ever daily GLP-1 weight-loss tablet licensed in the UK.
This landmark decision makes the UK the first country in Europe to approve an oral GLP-1 treatment for weight management.
💊 How Does the Wegovy Pill Work?
Like the familiar injectable Wegovy, the pill contains semaglutide – a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural hormone released after eating. It works by:
- Regulating appetite in areas of the brain
- Helping you feel fuller for longer
- Reducing hunger and food cravings
This supports sustainable weight reduction alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
📊 Impressive Clinical Results
Approval is based on the OASIS 4 phase 3 clinical trial. After 64 weeks, adults with obesity receiving the 25 mg tablet achieved around 14% weight loss (13.6%) versus just 2% (2.4%) with placebo. For those who fully adhered to treatment, weight loss reached approximately 17%.
✨ Key Benefits for Patients
A Needle-Free Alternative – For many, this is the biggest advantage. Professor Naveed Sattar from the University of Glasgow noted this is “particularly welcome for those who would prefer not to use injections”.
No Fridge Required – Unlike the jab, the pill does not need to be refrigerated.
Flexible Dosing – The starting dose is 1.5 mg once daily, escalating to 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg with at least one month at each dose level.
Easy Transition – Patients currently on the 2.4 mg weekly injection can transition straight to the 25 mg daily tablet.
📋 Important Things to Know
MHRA Approval vs. NHS Availability – The pill has regulatory approval but is not yet available on the NHS, as it still requires a NICE evaluation for cost-effectiveness.
Private Prescription Coming Soon – Novo Nordisk anticipates the Wegovy pill will be available via private prescription within weeks.
How to Take It – The tablet must be taken whole on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, with only a sip of water. No food or drink should be consumed for at least 30 minutes afterwards.
Side Effects – The most common are gastrointestinal (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting), generally mild to moderate and transient.
🛡️ A Word of Caution
National Pharmacy Association chair Olivier Picard has raised concerns about a “growing black market for counterfeit weight loss treatments,” noting that a tablet form could be easier to counterfeit. Patients must only ever obtain weight loss medication from a regulated pharmacy.
