Why Check Your
Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is known as the “silent killer” because it almost never causes noticeable symptoms. Yet it is one of the single biggest risk factors for heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other life-threatening conditions.
Around one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure, and many do not know it. The only reliable way to find out is to have it measured. A check at Carlton Lane Pharmacy takes around 5 minutes, is completely free, and requires no appointment.
If your reading is elevated, our pharmacist will explain what it means, offer lifestyle advice, and refer you to your GP if needed, ensuring you get the right follow-up care without delay.
What Do the Numbers Mean?
Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers, systolic (when your heart beats) over diastolic (when your heart rests between beats). Both matter.
90/60 – 120/80
Your blood pressure is at a healthy level. Stay active, eat well, keep salt intake low and limit alcohol to maintain it.
120/80 – 140/90
Above the ideal range but not yet high. Lifestyle changes now can prevent this from progressing to hypertension.
140/90 or above
Classified as hypertension. Our pharmacist will advise on lifestyle changes and whether a GP referral is appropriate.
180/120 or above
Needs urgent attention. Our pharmacist will direct you to the appropriate level of care immediately.
Important
Blood pressure can vary throughout the day and a single reading is not always conclusive on its own. Our pharmacist will explain your result and advise whether repeat monitoring or a GP review is recommended.
Who Is Most at Risk of High Blood Pressure?
Anyone can develop high blood pressure, but certain factors significantly increase the risk. If any of these apply to you, regular monitoring is especially important.
Over 65
Blood pressure naturally tends to rise with age. Regular checks are strongly recommended.
High Salt Intake
A diet high in salt causes fluid retention which raises blood pressure over time.
Being Overweight
Excess weight makes the heart work harder, which can significantly raise blood pressure.
Family History
High blood pressure has a strong genetic component — if a parent had it, your risk is higher.
Heavy Alcohol Use
Regularly drinking above recommended limits raises blood pressure meaningfully over time.
Smoking
Smoking narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Quitting reduces your risk significantly.
Six Ways to Keep Your Blood
Pressure Healthy
Reduce Salt
Aim for less than 6g of salt per day. Avoid processed foods and ready meals which are often high in hidden salt. Use herbs and spices to add flavour instead.
Exercise Regularly
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Even brisk daily walking makes a measurable difference to your cardiovascular health over time.
Limit Alcohol
Keep within the recommended 14 units per week, spread over at least 3 days. Avoid binge drinking, which causes acute spikes in blood pressure each time.
Maintain Healthy Weight
Even a modest reduction in weight if you are overweight can produce meaningful improvements in your blood pressure reading within a matter of weeks.
Manage Stress
Chronic stress raises blood pressure over time. Try mindfulness, yoga, regular relaxation practices, or simply prioritising good sleep each night.
Monitor Regularly
If you have been told your reading is elevated, regular monitoring is essential. Pop into Carlton Lane Pharmacy for a free check at any time — no appointment needed.

No appointment is needed. Simply walk into Carlton Lane Pharmacy at 2 Carlton Lane, Lofthouse, WF3 3LJ during our opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6pm.
The check itself takes around 2 minutes. Including a brief discussion of your results and any lifestyle advice, most people are in and out within 10 minutes.
Our pharmacist will explain your result clearly, provide lifestyle advice, and if your reading is significantly elevated, recommend you see your GP. We can help facilitate a referral if needed.
If your blood pressure is normal, a check every 1–2 years is generally recommended. If you have been told it is elevated or you have risk factors such as age, family history, or a chronic condition, more frequent monitoring is advisable. Our pharmacist will advise based on your reading.
