The current MenB Vaccination is a time‑limited NHS programme to help protect young people against Meningococcal B, a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis. Some of our patients are seeking clarity regarding the eligibility for the vaccine.

Here is a clear breakdown of who can get the vaccine and the reasoning behind the age limits.

Who is eligible?

The free NHS MenB vaccine is available to two specific groups:

1. School Leavers: Young people aged 17 or 18 who were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008.
2. New University or College Students: Anyone under 25, born on or after 21 July 2001, who is starting university or residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026.

Why is the age cut-off set this way?

This is the most common question patients ask, and the answer is based on risk and the history of the vaccine:

• The biggest risk is when people mix for the first time: The risk of MenB is significantly higher when large groups of young people come together and live closely for the first time – such as in halls of residence. First‑year students are around seven times more likely to be affected than non‑students of the same age.
• Later years are lower risk: Once students are in their second or third year, this initial mixing period has passed, and the risk is not considered high enough for a targeted programme.
• The “catch‑up” gap: The routine MenB vaccine has been given to babies since 2015. This means anyone currently aged 11 or older has never been routinely offered it on the NHS. This one‑off programme is designed to close that protection gap for the highest‑risk groups.
• The 25‑year cut‑off: The under‑25 eligibility for students is based on the evidence that the risk of MenB is greatest in this younger age group when they first enter higher education.

Who is NOT eligible?

The vaccine is not offered to:

• Postgraduate students.
• Students returning for a second or subsequent year of study.
• Anyone aged 25 or over (unless they fall into the 17‑18 school leaver group).

Important: If you are not eligible for the NHS programme, the vaccine may be available privately through some pharmacies and GP surgeries, though we do not offer the vaccine privately at Carlton Lane Pharmacy.
