There’s been some important news this week. The government has announced a £340 million deal to significantly expand what community pharmacies across England can do for patients, with the rollout beginning from Autumn 2026.
Here’s a breakdown of what this means in practice for you and your family.
👉 A Major Step for Faster, Local Care
The heart of this announcement is the expansion of Independent Prescribing (IP). Under the new deal, qualified pharmacists with an IP qualification will be able to assess, make clinical decisions, and prescribe medicines for a range of NHS conditions directly on the spot.
This builds on the success of the existing Pharmacy First service, under which over 3.3 million consultations were already delivered between March 2025 and February 2026 – a massive 43% increase on the previous year.
✋ New Conditions to be Added
Currently, you can visit your local pharmacy for seven common conditions without needing to see a GP first: sore throat, earache, sinusitis, shingles, impetigo, infected bites, and UTIs. The £340m deal will now add five more conditions to that list – meaning an even wider range of treatments will be available directly from your pharmacist.
📣 Positive Reaction from Sector Leaders
Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Community Pharmacy England, welcomed the move, stating: “It opens the door to pharmacist prescribing – a first step towards making fuller use of their clinical expertise”. She added she hopes these changes will help pharmacies play an even greater role in supporting patients and improving access to care right in their communities.
Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, also noted that “expanding independent prescribing will help make better use of the clinical expertise within our community pharmacy teams, helping patients get the right care in the right place”.
💚 What Does This Mean for You?
This new agreement is designed to benefit you directly in several key ways:
- Faster Access to Treatment – As appointments with family doctors are under increased pressure, you will be able to receive prescriptions and clinical care from your local pharmacy without needing a GP referral. Minister of State for Care, Stephen Kinnock said: “Independent prescribing will play a major part in delivering this shift – easing pressures on GPs, cutting unnecessary red tape and helping patients get the right care closer to home.”
- More Choice and Convenience – With more common conditions added to the list and local pharmacists empowered to prescribe on the spot, you can access high-quality, convenient care on your local high street, reducing the need for hospital or A&E visits.
- Better Use of Clinical Skills – The deal will make better use of the expert clinical knowledge within pharmacy teams, improving your experience and outcomes.
